    • The computer froze again. I was playing solitare.
      • Reconnected the internal DVD, internal 4TB HD, webcam, scanner.
    • Last time I ignored the KVM switch. This time I removed it. Now the keyboard, mouse and monitor plug directly into the motherboard.
      • That limits access to the server which is on the now disabled KVM.
    • Swapped out the network cable and switch ports in the network switch
      • Ports 6 and 7.
    • Replaced the power cord.
    • Again, all that is left is the SSD, the CPU and the audio out. If it doesn't freeze again I have to regain complete access to the server.
    • Bet SSD.
  • 2014-09-07
    • Computer froze. I was restarting Deluge which had crashed over night.
    • The only components left are the power supply, CPU and SSD.
    • Maintanence performed:
      • Swapped out power supply with dualCore-32bit.
      • Replaced SSD SATA cable.
      • Put a few more drops of thermal paste on the CPU. Now it averages 9 degrees hotter per core.
      • unplugged:
        • scanner
        • webcam
        • internal DVD
        • internal 4TB HD
      • that leaves:
        • SSD
        • kvm switch: video, usb mouse and keyboard
        • network cable (internet and printer on the network)
        • audio out
        • internal headers for the front of the case (nothing plugged in)
        • power cord
  • 2014-09-06
    • Replaced motherboard. Same brand, same model.
    • Added 16 gigs of ram. Now there is 32GB on the mobo
    • I had to pull the heat sink off the CPU. It averages about 10 degrees hotter per core than the baselines.
  • 2014-08-19
    • Windows doesn't work.
      • Changed SATA Control Mode back to IDE.
  • 2014-07-19
    • Replaced 2TB HDD with 4TB HDD (Movies1).
    • Removed the Sound Blaster Audigy. Put it in spare equipment.
    • BIOS -- Integrated Peripherals -- ICH SATA Control Mode
      • changed from IDE to AHCI.
  • 2014-07-05
    • /etc/apt/sources.list
      • uncomment lines 53 & 54: Canonical's 'partner' repository
  • 2014-07-01
    • Master plays movie.iso files that eCenter can't.
    • To restore 10.04 to this computer leaves a hole in the libdvdcss libraries.
    • See Setup Logs for eCENTER on 2014-03-07 for clarification.
  • 2014-07-01
    • Dragon and Kaffine play the DVD "Red 2". K3b copies it but neither video program can play the copy. Master does all this but the video programs play the copy.
    • Copied Master's copy (which it played) to eCenter. eCenter can NOT play it.
    • There is a hole in this computers libdvdcss libraries.
  • 2014-06-30
    • The computer froze.
    • This all started when I made 3 changes:
      • I added 16 Gigs of RAM.
      • I upgraded Kubuntu from 10.04 to 12.04.
      • I swapped out the HD for an SSD.
    • The options are:
      • Something on the motherboard or CPU either failed or was broken at this time.
      • The SSD is bad.
      • The upgrade 12.04 has holes or conflicts with something on my system.
  • 2014-06-29
    • Computer froze. Removed 16 Gigs of RAM.
      • The motherboard owners manual states
        • Always install DIMMs with the same CAS latency. For optimum compatibility, we recommend that you obtain memory modules from the same vendor.
      • If the RAM isn't the same batch I don't know how to match CAS latency?
  • 2014-06-08
    • Made changes to Deluge a week ago. So far it is still working. I'm going ot call it.

    • Isolating Master lockup
      • Swaped ram between Master and i7-4960x (Server).
      • Found both had two tall sticks and two short sticks.
      • Put all the tall in Master. All the short in i7-4960x (Server).
      • Pictures of the ram and more information.
  • 2014-03-23
    • Ran grub mem check overnight again. 3.64 passes. No errors
  • 2014-03-22
    • Computer has locked up 3 times since I upgraded the OS and added the extra ram on 2014-02-14.
      • At boot up the grub menu has an option to check the ram. With only one OS it doesn't show. To access it, remark out (#) hidden timeout and set timeout to a small value:
        • /etc/default/grub
          • # GRUB_HIDDEN_TIMEOUT=0
          • GRUB_TIMEOUT=4 (it was 10)
      • Then: sudo update-grub
    • I ran three complete passes of the ram last night. There were NO errors.
  • 2014-03-07
    • Can't play or copy DVDs.
      • The maintainer of the Medibuntu repository bailed. Much of kubuntu-restricted-extras don't exist.

    • Had a printer issue. See notes at "Printer.html".
  • 2014-02-17
    • Copied a movie for eCenter to Master. Once again it ran 11.9MB/s on the house network.
      • Moved the plug on the switch from position 1 to 5.
    • 62.5MB/s.
  • 2014-02-14
    • Upgraded to Kubuntu 12.04 LTS (precise) Desktop 64 bit
    • Added 16 Gigs of ram. New total: 32GB.
    • Replace 1TB hd with 250GB SSD
    • Network file trasfers at 1/6 normal. Measured it with "scp some_movie.iso". Moved the plug in the GB switch from one plug to another. Then put it back. Fixed it.
